Although the publications were not produced within the framework of the TRANSGEO project, their content directly supports the project’s objectives by increasing awareness of the sustainable reuse potential of existing subsurface infrastructure.
Hungary has a long history of hydrocarbon exploration, resulting in several thousand deep wells across the country that are no longer used for mining purposes. BVH currently manages 2334 inactive wells, of which approximately 170 wells are considered to have high potential for conversion to energy use following appropriate technical refurbishment and adaptation.
The repurposing of existing wells offers a cost-efficient and lower-risk alternative to drilling new geothermal wells. In the agricultural sector, geothermal heat can provide a reliable and environmentally friendly energy source for greenhouses, livestock facilities and other agricultural operations, contributing to stable energy supply and reduced operating costs.
The utilisation of geothermal energy supports the replacement of fossil fuels, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and enables locally available, weather-independent heat supply. By promoting these solutions among agricultural stakeholders, the publication contributes to the wider dissemination and practical uptake of concepts that are central to the TRANSGEO project.
